George Will’s column doesn’t appear in the New York Times either as it turns out (see previous entry), but his column can be found on sacbee.com. Today he discussed a book written by Virginia Postrel, “The Substance of Style: How the Rise of Aesthetic Value is Remaking Commerce, Culture, and Consciousness“.
His column, and her book, made me think of an editorial that appeared in the Chronicle of Higher Education last year called, “A (Mild) Defense of Luxury”‘ by James B. Twitchell. The editorial was adapted from Twitchell’s book, “Living It Up: America’s Love Affair with Luxury“. Like Ms. Postrel, Mr. Twitchell goes against the norm in academia and defends the idea of luxury.
